Watch A Solar Panel Pigeon Exclusion Performed By A Santa Clarita Pest Control Company (VIDEO)
You can watch a real-life pigeon exclusion being performed by a Santa Clarita pest control company as a result of an infestation underneath a client’s solar panels.
The client originally contacted Unipest because a scratching noise on the roof was keeping his wife up at night, according to Owner Cardon Ellis.
“The first thing I noticed upon arriving at this guy’s house is that there was bird poo everywhere,” Ellis said in a recent YouTube video short by Unipest. “Principally we deal in Southern California with starlings and pigeons, so in order to identify the bird, I had to do a thorough inspection of the roofing area where she was hearing the scratches.”
At least 20 pigeons were found to be living underneath the solar panels on the client’s roof, and Ellis knew that a pigeon exclusion would need to be performed.

“All of us love solar electricity,” Ellis said. “But unfortunately, the gap in between the panels provides a two to three inch gap for pigeons to rest, nest and digest with their young and all of the food that they forage during the day.”
Before starting the exclusion, the area needed to be sanitized thoroughly due to the 60-plus diseases pigeons are known to potentially carry in their fecal matter and nesting debris, Ellis added.
“The pigeons are across the street waiting to see when we’re done,” he said during the sanitizing. “Little do they know, there will be no home for them when they come back.”
The exclusion process itself is “pretty straightforward,” Ellis noted, and involves counting the linear feet of solar paneling so they can cut the corresponding number of galvanized and powder-coated hardware cloth used to keep the pigeons away.
This cloth is then attached to the solar panels with clips instead of by drilling to secure the cloth in place.
“After you’ve done that, you make small modifications in order to make sure you maintain the seal between the composite, or in this case, the tile roofing,” he said. “Once that’s done, you’re good.”
