Two Ways To Know If You Have A Gopher Problem

At Unipest Termite and Pest Control in Santa Clarita, we want to help you identify and get rid of any animals living in your yard.

One of the most common types of animal infestations is gophers. Gophers may carry harmful diseases that can spread to humans and house pets. Gophers dig underground and can damage irritation pipes, sprinkler systems and yard appearance in general.

Since gophers hide from humans a lot, it can be difficult to physically see one. Two ways to know that you have gophers is to check for tunnels and piles of dirt in your yard. These are the main giveaways that you are dealing with gophers.

Gophers tend to leave their damage behind in the spring and fall. This is when they are actively digging their tunnels when it is not as hot outside. This is probably the best time to catch them if you want to use gopher traps.

Once summer hits, the gophers may not show themselves as often because of the heat. They will be hiding in their tunnels. This is also a great chance for you to put a smoke bomb in their tunnel when you know they are in there.

If you are going to use a smoke bomb, there are a few important steps you must take. The first step is identifying that you are dealing with gophers. The second step is having proper protective equipment and tools. You will need safety glasses and protective gloves. We use a trowel so we can easily dig soil out and get into the tunnels.

It is important that you do not waste the smoke bomb by not digging all the way into the tunnels. The trowel must dig deep enough so the smoke can make its way through the tunnels. You should then light the smoke bomb and make sure the fuse is pointed into the tunnel head first so the gas can stay inside the tunnels. Then, cover up the tunnel so the gas stays inside the tunnels.

If you still cannot identify if you are dealing with gophers, consider giving Unipest Termite and Pest Control a call for a free inspection in Santa Clarita.
