DIY Pest Control In Santa Clarita: How To Get Rid Of ‘Pantry Pest’ Indian Meal Moths

Unipest - Pest Control in Santa Clarita

Those interested in DIY pest control in Santa Clarita can learn how to get rid of the “pantry pest” Indian meal moths with the help of the experts from Unipest.

Cardon Ellis of Unipest explained that the first step is always to make sure the pest is correctly identified.

“The Indian meal moth is pretty easy to identify because it comes from places that store meal or grain, such as your kitchen or pantry, and it’s one of the few pantry pests that take flight,” he said.

Some may confuse the Indian meal moth with small moths, termites or flying ants because of their fluttering abilities, but Ellis pointed out that the biggest difference is that they usually stay put when they land.

After the Indian meal moths have been identified, the next step is to locate and discard contaminated food items, which are often flour bags, cereal boxes, etc.

“The trick to finding this infected bag of flour or this infected bag of noodles or pasta or whatever is by actually taking that bag and flipping it upside down and then looking to see in that bag if there’s any larvae or any kind of cocoons that the Indian meal moths have made,” Ellis said.

After getting rid of the contaminated food, the last step is to put on the proper protective equipment and spray the area.

Essential oils or an organic pesticide can be used, but Ellis noted the quickest solution would be a synthetic aerosol pyrethroid labeled to treat Indian meal moths, such as his “favorite,” CB-80.

“Make sure that you remove any food items that are open or don’t have their factory seal just to make the whole area more accessible,” Ellis said. “Spray it in all of the cracks and the crevices of that pantry.”

Ellis concluded, “If you see Indian meal moths and you want to get rid of them, try and follow these steps. If it’s too much for you, give us a call.”
