Can You Tell The Difference Between Rats And Mice

RAT - Unipest - Pest Control in Santa Clarita

At Unipest Pest Control in Santa Clarita, we focus on educating our clients to help them figure out what kind of infestation they may have inside their home.

One difficult rodent to tell apart is a rat and a mouse. The main way to tell these rodents apart is by their feces. A mouse has small feces that are about the size of a piece of rice. They also have pointed ends. A rat has larger feces. They are still rice shaped, but they are larger than rice itself. They are rounded at the ends and glisten when they are fresh.

Rats and mice are very different. Since their biology is distinctly different, their treatment methods are too. Mice are clearly smaller than rats. Mice love to explore things and are really curious in nature. Since mice are much smaller, you should be using much smaller traps and scented blue boards because you want to attract them through the smell. Since mice are very curious, they should immediately be attracted to the smell.

Rats are neophobic. This means that they dislike anything new or unfamiliar. They are not as curious as mice are. When treating rats, you should be using larger unscented blue boards. If they are scented, rats will specifically avoid it. These unscented blue boards should be placed in the pathways they walk on repeatedly. This will cause them to trip on them.

It is important to remember that rodents can spread bacteria through their feces. Rodents should be taken care of immediately so they do not make a permanent home out of their chosen spots. While rats typically stay in one place at a time, mice love to explore. This means that mice can easily spread their feces faster which can damage more items inside your home.

We have provided many different identifiers and treatment options for rodents and insects on our website at https://www.unipest.com.
