Pest Control In Santa Clarita: Three Species Of Birds Considered ‘Registered Pests’ By State

Pigeons - UNIPEST - Santa Clarita Pest Control

There are three different species of birds that are considered “registered pests” by the state of California, according to an expert on pest control in Santa Clarita.

Pigeons, swallows and starlings fall under this category because of the diseases they frequently carry, according to Cardon Ellis from Unipest.

“There’s a reason why they’re bad,” Ellis said, specifically referring to pigeons. “They carry 64 different diseases. People don’t realize.”

Areas in Saugus, Valencia and Canyon Country seem to be the most impacted lately by a high number of swallows, especially near Golden Valley Road, Ellis noted.

“Swallows are unique because they will come back to the same place after having not been there for thousands of miles,” Ellis said, mentioning the time when swallows migrate as the seasons change. “So it only takes not paying attention for a really long summer or winter or something like that to all of a sudden have 20 of these nests.”

Despite the number of nests, if these nests contain eggs, Ellis noted it is illegal for a company such as Unipest to remove the swallows.

Many calls have been coming in to Unipest recently about pigeons, but instead of homeowners, the calls are instead from air conditioning repair businesses.

“We’ve had a lot of calls lately from air conditioning repair people that can’t work on air conditioners because the poo has been so thick, it’s stopped the rotors and it’s shutting down,” Ellis said. We have to go and crawl through these weird areas (and remove it).”
