Exterminate Paper Wasps With DIY Tips From Santa Clarita Pest Control Company (VIDEO)
Residents can exterminate paper wasps themselves this summer with the help of a few DIY tips from the Santa Clarita pest control company Unipest.
The first step is to make sure the wasps are correctly identified by visually inspecting them and their nest, according to Cardon Ellis of Unipest.
“They have long slender legs that tend to hang while they’re in flight and they have distinctive yellow markings,” Ellis said. “But more than anything, they’re recognized by their paper mache almost beehive-looking concave nests that they make — hence the name paper wasps.”
Then Ellis advised “suiting up” in the proper protective gear, keeping in mind that though paper wasps don’t tend to be aggressive, they can sting if provoked, which can be very painful and lead to severe allergic reactions.
“I know you look kind of goofy, but let me tell you, one sting from a paper wasp nest or a paper wasp will make you think all of this goofy was worth it,” Ellis said.

After a wasp spray has been chosen and it is determined that there are no animals or other people around, Ellis then said to “proceed with caution” toward the nest, getting as close as possible before starting to spray.
“Some aerosols boast being able to spray up to 25, 30 feet from the can, but the truth is, if you’re trying to do this from 25 or 30 feet away, you’re going to be wasting a ton of product unnecessarily,” Ellis said. “Trust your bee suit and try and do this from as close to point blank as you possibly can.”
Following use of the spray, Ellis advised waiting to remove it for about 24 hours or overnight, which will allow other paper wasps that had left the nest to feed enough time to come back.
“The residual from some of these pesticides is often enough to exterminate the wasps that weren’t even present for the initial spray, so it’s beneficial to let it hang around for a little while,” Ellis said.
