Best Rat Traps For Roof Rats And What To Look For
A household member has construction workers ready to tear down a wall to get to the pipes for copper re-piping, however what they did not know is that there were rats within the walls.
The rats came crawling out and infested the household.
The rats stayed in the kitchen or went into the rooms and nibbled on the kids’ mattresses.
“First know exactly what species of rat you’re dealing with and second design a trapping program accordingly,” said Cardon Ellis from Unipest pest control.
The client provided videos of the rats taking over her house and Cadson knew he was dealing with roof rats by the feces droppings. Santa Clarita is known to have roof rats, so Cardon uses the basic wooden base Victor rat trap.
“It’s reliable especially if you get the kind with the metal trigger,” Cardon said.
To get the rat trap set up, take a one-inch by one-inch piece of cardboard and place it to the metal trigger. Place peanut butter or any food the rats are used to eating on the trigger area.
The good thing about the wooden rat trap is that it can go into small spaces, however, be careful to place it where pets or kids cannot get to. The Victor rat trap can be placed in cabinets or under couches.
“When placing snap traps in the attic it’s very important that you place these snap traps in the area where the blood and urine trails from the rats are most prevalent,” Cardon said.
If you have small pets and do not feel comfortable using the wooden rat trap, then you can use the electric Victor rat trap which is more pet friendly.
This device is powered by four c-sized batteries which you can place the device anywhere in the house. The electric rat trap works almost the same as the wooden rat trap.
“Electric traps are best placed up against the walls facing areas where we know that the roof rats go also,” Cardon said.
It is possible for the rats not to go to the trap right away so you may need to be patient until they approach the traps.
