Unipest Explains How To Get Rid Of Meal Moths For Good
Cardon Ellis of Unipest Pest Control explains an interaction with a customer when a homeowner heading to the kitchen to grab cereal in the pantry for breakfast and finds pests inside the box.
Now the question pops in the customer’s head on what type of pest this is and how to get rid of them, Ellis said. In this case the homeowner is dealing with an Indian meal moth.
To properly identify the pest all you need to look for is where they are camping. If it is in pantries stored with food and the pest can fly, then you are dealing with an Indian meal moth.
“Oftentimes the Indian meal moth is confused with termites by laymen who don’t know the difference between flying ants, small moths, or termites,” Ellis said.
Indian meal moths are mistaken for termites by the way they fly but as long as they nest near food, then you can cross out termites.
The first step to take on eliminating them is to take out every food item that has been contaminated and throw it out. Be sure to look thoroughly and effectively to find any larvae or cocoons. Flip the bags upside down to locate any pests.

“Usually it’s some cereal box; some bag of flour; it’s some bit of dried lasagna or noodles,” Ellis said. “I once found larvae inside a popcorn bag that was sealed and the customers response was extremely surprised.”
The final step is to use essential oils or any organic chemicals such as EcoVia. This method is a bit slow than others but if people prefer a faster solution then use CB-40, CB-80, or synthetic aerosol. Be sure to check the labeling for the right treatment on the pests you want to eliminate.
Use the spray along cracks and crevices in the area that is infested. Be sure to wear gloves or any protective gear when using the product.
