Pest Control In Santa Clarita: Solar Panels Can Harbor Pigeon Infestations
An expert on pest control in Santa Clarita recommends homeowners keep an eye out for pigeons nesting under roof-mounted solar panels.
Cardon Ellis from Unipest warned that pigeons can nest in the gap between solar panels and roofs, and residents often don’t know about the problem until the infestation gets out of hand.
“I’m getting a lot of this lately, especially in Stevenson Ranch, parts of Lost Canyon,” Ellis said. “Those guys have these solar panels crammed on the roof into every nook and cranny. And the way they’re elevated, that little 6-inch elevator is the perfect distance to make pigeons feel comfortable.”
Since roof insulation cancels out the sound of the birds moving around under the panels, home owners may not realize there’s a problem right away. During this time, the number of pigeons can multiply to upwards of 20, and with more birds comes more noise and mess.

“At first, when it’s small and there’s only a couple of pigeons, you don’t really hear it because the tile roof provides insulation (and) the sound has to go through the attic,” the expert on pest control in Santa Clarita explained.
Once pigeons realize a home’s solar panels provide a safe space to build nests, the residents’ problems begin to multiply. As more and more birds come to roost, the residents may start to notice scratching sounds coming from their roofs. The noise level pigeons can produce in large numbers is reported to rival larger pests like possums or raccoons.
“When all of a sudden there’s 20 or 30 of them … people will think there’s raccoons and stuff like that, and they’ll call me thinking it’s (maybe) wildlife,” Ellis said.
Although pigeons are smaller than their noise level might lead residents to believe, they’re still capable of creating a lot of filth, according to Ellis. He warns that their eggs and nests create “filthy” conditions, and the mess they make can be difficult to deal with.
