How To Identify And Treat Dry Wood Termites
Unipest Pest Control has been Santa Clarita’s #1 pest control for many years.
Cardon Ellis, the company owner, gives tips on how to treat dry wood termites with orange oil and bora-care.
A good way to check if you might have termites is to knock on the wall for a hollow sound. It’s good to do this because you might have termites living in your house for years without knowing.
“This is about a seven to ten-year-old infestation, so we are going to kill them with orange oil and bora-care,” Cardon said. “Termites have a tendency to eat the wood from the inside out.”
Southern California is known to frequently have dry wood termites that create smooth openings or galleries. Be on the lookout if your house has any galleries that the hole looks smooth on the inside.
“Now whenever you find a termite infestation in a patio cover, oftentimes that is the tip of the iceberg, so we are going to go inside and make sure that there are no other termites or see if they are indeed other termites” Ellis said.

The equipment needed to treat dry wood termites are a drill, proper gloves, eye protection, bora-care, and orange oil.
The beginning process of exterminating the termites are:
- Step 1-Drill a hole into the infected pieces of wood. You will feel the termites inside once you feel that slip.
- Step 2-Inject the gallery through the hole with orange oil and you will hear it.
- Step 3-It will soak slowly through the wood or capillary effect for four to six hours.
- Step 4-Do the same thing every eight to twelve inches.
The orange oil is injected into the holes damaged by the termites. This will soak the wood and eliminate the termites. After that is done bora-care is sprayed on the outside.
Orange oil will show on the wood but that only means the colony is now located. Extra bora-care can be used to treat all the wood to eliminate any spreading.
Cardon was confident and by the end of the treatment he said, “By the time we’re done spraying these pieces of wood you might as well have them made out of metal.”
